Three generations, one oven
Bakaren Gjum started as a family kitchen with four tables. It is still a family kitchen, just with more tables.

In 1987 Vera and Dimitar cleared the ground floor of their house on Gjumarska Street, built a wood-fired oven and put four tables in front of it. Neighbours came for the beans; tourists found us by the smell of bread.
The copper jug that gave us our name hung by the door. Dimitar’s father carried water from the spring in it, and later Dimitar filled it with house wine for the tables. It still hangs there.
Today the kitchen is run by their grandson Nikola and his wife Ana. The menu has grown and a terrace was built, but Vera still comes in every morning to taste the beans before the first guests arrive.
