The beans take four hours. The table is yours all evening.

Bakaren Gjum is a family tavern in Ohrid’s old town. We cook Macedonian food the slow way: tavče gravče from the wood-fired oven, peppers roasted over coals, home-baked bread and wine from Tikveš.

A large rustic dining hall with wooden roof trusses, a gallery level and tables set for dinner.

Vera and Dimitar opened the tavern in 1987 on the ground floor of their own house, with four tables and a wood-fired oven.

Their grandson Nikola runs it now, and Vera still comes in every morning to check the beans.
